“For inspiration, we turned to Kolkata’s historic social clubs, which have, since the British era, been an integral part of the city’s socio-cultural landscape,” says Principal Asha Sairam, reflecting on the inspiration behind Taj Taal Kutir.
This property marks the first of four collaborations with Ambuja Neotia. Studio Lotus reinterpreted this legacy by working with an existing architectural shell to articulate its facade and design the interiors. Taj Taal Kutir’s architectural narrative is a powerful tribute to Kolkata’s multifaceted heritage. The design interlaces historical elements with contemporary sensibilities—Juliet balconies and Bahama shutters take cues from Bengal’s iconic khorkhori windows, while the Neoclassical façade anchors the structure in timeless elegance. Interiors are defined by an interplay of Art Deco influences and indigenous craftsmanship. Guests can unwind on private verandahs or by the granite pool, with the tranquil lake amplifying the retreat’s oasis-like ambience.
