Design Anthology

June 2020

"Modern urban India breathes in contradictions. Shimmering towers cast long shadows over crumbling ruins; gated enclaves share boundaries with old urban villages. On its streets, SUVs jostle for space with rickshaws, hand-pulled thelas, and the occasional unbothered cow. In the narrow gullies of Lado Sarai, where homes are stacked shoulder to shoulder, space feels scarce, borrowed, fragile.

India is on the brink of an urban explosion—expected to double its building stock by 2030 and add over 400 million city dwellers by 2050. The environmental weight of such expansion looms large. But a quiet counter current is emerging, and Studio Lotus, a New Delhi-based architecture and design firm, is among its most thoughtful voices."

In a reflective piece by Design Anthology, the principals of Studio Lotus look back on some of their most iconic works—tracing the layered journey behind projects like Mehrangarh Fort, RAAS Jodhpur, and more. They speak of the challenges faced, the negotiations made, and the quiet triumphs that shaped each space—not just as design feats, but as enduring conversations with history and place.
